There will be another Spring...

Kyle
But there will never, ever be another you.  That's part of an old lyric, you know.  And true.  And sad.

So a year ago, we lost Kyle.  It doesn't seem possible that a child you had such great hopes for (as we did all of our "boys") could be gone.  I remember laughing with him, arguing with him, being more frustrated than I could believe with him, and loving him.

He had many talents, an incredible sense of fairness, and demons that none of us will ever know.  His brothers loved him and tried
to help him and hopefully still have some happy memories of old times.  He was the only person I ever knew who could walk up and pet a robin on the head!  Uncanny.  And that smile!

Dad and I miss you.  Don Williams wrote and sang a song and the words of the chorus are haunting -

"Some broken hearts never mend,
Some memories never end,
Some tears will never dry
And my love for you will never die."

Surprises

Sunset at Lake Maloney

Used to love surprises as a kid. That was when surprises were generally something wonderful, like new skates or Petit Fours from your Indiana Granny on your birthday. Or rainbows.

Occasionally you get a little something like the sunset up top. We live at Lake Maloney south of North Platte, NE -   at least part of the time. It is a small lake, only about 1500 acres and is part of a system belonging to Dawson County Public Power.  It is part of a chain of lakes producing hydroelectric power.  Most people would be amazed that
an area that was once known as the Great American Desert actually sits above the Ogallala Aquafir, which supplies water and power to most of the middle of the United States.

 Nice surprise, huh?

Strange Happenings in North Platte

Today is Friday, May 16, the first day of "Dress Western Day" in North Platte (this happens every year prior to NebraskaLand Days).

If you're not wearing cowboy duds, I think someone comes to arrest you. They force you to plant flowers. Is this what they mean by "pushing up daisies"?
